The Papillon Shawl by Marin Melchior (MarinJa Knits)

Short Rows!  Colorwork!  Oh my!

Just kidding.  This is a very fun project using W&T (Wrap and Turns), one of many types of short rows.  But these are the easy kind of short rows; no picking up the wraps, no purling in the entire shawl, and we're going to use a self-striping color way so almost all of the colorwork is automatic.

This ingenious design is purl free.  You never use more than one color at a time.  If you can cast on, knit and follow a pattern (no charts!), you'll be fine.  We're going to discuss the pattern, the increases used and the short row technique.  Then we'll cast on together, do the set up, learn the basics of the design and work through to at least Section 2.  After which, you will have all the tools and confidence needed to complete this project at your own pace.  

You'll need two 100g fingering weight skeins of yarn in the MC (or Multi Color) in a long, slow changing color way, and one solid/semi solid for the CC (Contrast Color).  We have LOTS of suitable yarns to choose from.

You'll also need size US4 (3.5mm)needles.  I recommend a 16-24" circular to start, but you'll want a longer cord as the shawl grows.  There really is no gauge for this project, but you may need more yarn if yours varies greatly from the designer.
